A carved sign is recessed or indented and the design sits below the surface of the signage material. Base-relief signs are just the opposite. They are created by routing away the background to make the design stand out. They can give you an outdoorsy, nautical or western character.

With either technique, you benefit from dimensionality. Unlike two-dimensional signs that feature only height and width, carved or routed signs add an element of depth. 3D signs are naturally more eye-catching and aesthetically appealing than flat alternatives.
